The Black Pine House / Ternopil / 2021

Location

The residence is situated in a picturesque setting in the Ternopil region, surrounded by an expansive natural landscape. The site combines an open meadow with a private forest of mature black pines, creating a dynamic contrast between light and shadow. Within the open terrain, an artificial pond was thoughtfully integrated into the landscape, reinforcing the dialogue between architecture and nature and enhancing the sense of tranquility and seclusion

The house was carefully positioned on the site to preserve the untouched forested area while maximizing visual connections to the lake from the bedrooms and main living spaces. The placement strategy was guided by a comprehensive sun path analysis, ensuring optimal natural light throughout the day.

All bedrooms and the living room are oriented toward the south and south-east, allowing for the best possible solar exposure and panoramic views, while maintaining a sensitive integration with the surrounding landscape

Building plan

The total area of the house is 200 sq.m and is composed of three distinct volumes. The central block accommodates the open-plan studio living space and entrance hall, forming the heart of the home. The left wing is designated as the master (private) block, while the right wing functions as the children’s zone.

A glazed winter garden adjoins the studio, acting as a key architectural feature and a transitional space between interior and landscape, enhancing natural light and spatial depth.

Architecture

Architecture is thoughtfully integrated into the surrounding landscape, emphasizing harmony with nature. Only natural materials were used throughout the project.

Finishing

The façade is clad in wooden shingles, while the roof is finished with standing seam metal. All terraces are paved with porcelain tiles that mimic the texture and appearance of natural stone and are additionally finished with thermally treated wood, combining durability with a warm, tactile quality.

The structural system of the house is designed for clarity, efficiency, and elegance. The building rests on a monolithic concrete foundation, with walls constructed from aerated concrete blocks to ensure durability and thermal performance. Wooden trusses, spaced at 1200 mm, span up to 12 meters, forming the primary floor and roof structure and allowing for expansive, open-plan interior spaces. Special attention was given to the glazed winter garden, which is supported by a carefully engineered framework to maintain transparency and visual lightness, seamlessly integrating interior and exterior spaces.

Construction

Master plan

The site was carefully zoned to ensure both functional clarity and spatial harmony. It is divided into several distinct areas:

  • A recreational landscape zone with planted greenery, designed for relaxation and immersion in nature.

  • A technical and parking zone, discreetly integrated to maintain visual order and privacy.

  • A sequence of viewing terraces and a landscaped pathway leading toward the lake, strengthening the connection between the house and the waterfront.
